Researchers recently suggested the “brain fog” symptom associated with long Covid is equivalent to ageing 10 years.

What is Brain Fog?

  • Brain fog is a severe medical condition that can disrupt the proper functioning of our central nervous system.
  • It can interrupt or cause disturbance to our cognitive abilities, which can result in mental fatigue and confusion.
  • Brain fog itself is not a medical condition but instead a symptom of other medical conditions.
  • It is a common term used to describe mental confusion, difficulty concentrating, and difficulty remembering things.
  • The phrase is frequently used to refer to a collection of enduring symptoms, such as trouble concentrating, mild confusion, “fuzzy” or sluggish thoughts, forgetfulness, and a general feeling of exhaustion.

Causes

  • High levels of inflammation and changes in the hormones that control ones mood, energy, and focus are the causes of it.
  • Some common causes include stress, lack of sleep. poor nutrition, and certain medical conditions.
  • Hormonal imbalances, such as those that occur during menopause, can also cause brain fog. In some cases, brain fog may be a side effect of certain medications.
  • Lack of sleep can often lead to poor brain functions, prolonged stress and anxiety can affect mental health and body’s immune system, making weak mentally and physically leading to brain fog.
  • Electromagnetic radiation from computers, mobile phones, tablets, Diet amino acids, vitamins minerals, and antioxidants and Toxins, pollution, chemical substances, and insecticides etc are some other causes.

Treatments

  • Depending on what is causing brain fog, one must treat it with the right diet, supplement, exercises and should make positive lifestyle choices.
  • For example, if you’re anaemic, iron supplements may increase your production of red blood cells and reduce your brain fog.
  • Sufficient sleep, regular physical activities and proper stress management can also help you treat brain fog efficiently.
  • Make sure body is getting enough water throughout the day to keep your body and mind functioning at their best.
  • Avoiding multitasking approach as it might make brain becomes overloaded, which can lead to brain fog. Instead, try to focus on one task at a time.
